Cartoon Network removed Speedy Gonzales from its lineup until Hispanic organizations demanded he returned!




It was this last trait that got Speedy censored for a period of time. In 1999, Cartoon Network largely stopped showing Speedy Gonzalez in any of their programs. In 2002, a spokeswoman for the network explained Speedy's absence because he portrayed many ethnic stereotypes.Speedy Gonzalez is an animated mouse and Looney Tunes character. He is "the Fastest Mouse in all Mexico." As the description suggests, Speedy can run incredibly fast and speaks with a thick Mexican accent.
Despite his thick accent, when Speedy interacted with other characters, he spoke mostly in English. The small amount of Spanish he did use consisted of greetings, common phrases and misplaced references to Mexican food. As such, the network felt Speedy was a misrepresentation of Mexican culture.
However, fans, including the United Latin American Citizens, campaigned to get Speedy Gonzalez back on the air. Shorts featuring him were brought back to Cartoon Network in 2002, and he remains a popular character in Latin America.
